Communication is really hard! Arguments can be difficult to understand, especially if we don’t understand a speaker’s claims, or if we strongly disagree.

Here we show you how to practice the skills of systematic empathy, a set of steps you can use to gain an accurate understanding of someone else’s argument. By identifying confusing claims, asking questions, and reformulating the argument in your own words, you’re interpreting it to better understand what the author really means.
