7.2 Systematically Interpret Claims

Oftentimes, when arguments go bad (for example, if you’ve ever been on social media), it’s because people aren’t interpreting each other in a reasonable way.

Here we practice the skill of systematically interpreting claims about controversial issues.

To recap:

  • Notice when a statement requires reasonable interpretation (e.g., controversial, vague, or overstated)
  • Interpret the statement in the way that makes the most sense in context, and is most likely to be true
    • Choose a more modest or less extreme version of the statement
